Pontefract Park - Cutsyke/Glasshoughton

First, a heads up on the background here. Back in the day, a chap called Ian used to come in the Darrington hotel where I did a quiz on a Wednesday night. He was a regional big wig for the Yorkshire Water, he knew I was a cycle advocate, and he told me that the Water Board had some obligation to spend some money and do some work for cyclists around Pontefract Park, and asked me for my advice. I told him "at least six foot wide and well surfaced, down the side of the Racecourse". And that is what they did. The Water Board paid for it and did the work, As far as I know, neither Wakefield Met, nor the local cycle forum had any influence in the improvements except for rubber-stamping them. If Wakefield Met have made a contribution, it was placing a gate half way along that stop you cycling, and A frames at each end, (that stop you cycling), whatever, bearing in mind it is now a very good surface to the the northern end where it meets the M62, this was the original assessment:

Nothing would be better. There is slim justification for getting wet, dirty and lost on this rubbish. Cutsyke / Pontefract cycle way has little to recommend it

My revised assessment would be

A pleasant enough recreational route, the road is quicker, but if time is not an issue this is very pleasant (apart from the retarded A frames, gates and speed bumps)
